School Shooting in Oregon Adds Silver Rail Elementary to Grim List

The shooting at an elementary school in Oregon that resulted in the deaths of at least three children and one teacher on Thursday is one of a long string of school shootings that have stricken the nation over the last three decades.

From the massacre in Columbine, Colo., in 1999, which left more than a dozen people dead, to the carnage in Sandy Hook, Conn., more than a decade later, where 26 people were killed, — school shootings have left deep, lasting scars on communities, and in some cases on the entire country.

They have unfolded across the education landscape, from elementary schools to college campuses, at high school sports games and in university lecture halls amid the crunch of studying for final exams.

On Thursday, in Bend, Ore., about 160 miles southeast of Portland, a 16-year-old opened fire at Silver Rail Elementary around 1 p.m., according to the authorities. In addition to the four deaths, a 7-year-old child and another teacher were taken to a nearby hospital with critical injuries, they said.

It was the latest in a string of shootings that have shaken communities across the United States.

  • In Georgia, an 18-year-old opened fire at Apalachee High School, killing two students and two teachers. His father, who bought the rifle used by his son in the attack, was sentenced to 15 years in prison in July for murder and involuntary manslaughter, among other charges.

  • At Brown University last December, a gunman entered a lecture hall and killed two students and injured nine others.

  • Last year, at a Catholic school in Minneapolis, two people were killed and 19 were injured, including 16 children, during a back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic Church.

  • In 2022, an alum of Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, killed 21 people — 19 students and two teachers.

  • In 2018, a gunman killed 17 people and injured 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., one of the deadliest school shootings.
