Trump found to be on the wrong side of another 80-20 issue in new poll

President Donald Trump has found himself on the losing side of yet another lopsided issue.

Eight in 10 Americans say the execution of convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan should not be live-streamed to the public, according to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll released Thursday, and that includes many who support putting the gunman to death.

Trump has said he “absolutely” approved live-streaming the execution, which is scheduled for Dec. 3 in Texas, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said people “need to understand that there’s serious consequences for these types of things.”

A narrow 53 percent majority back executing him by firing squad, and just 43 percent of self-identified MAGA Republicans want the execution streamed, while 55 percent oppose it. MAGA Republican men were the only group in which more people supported the plan than opposed it.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) warned that the footage could become “a recruiting tool for future terrorists,” while Vice President JD Vance voiced concen about whether it should be live-streamed, and GOP voters did the same.

“It’s all for shock, and we don’t need that. We’re better than that,” Bruce Gonka, a 70-year-old Republican from New York, told the Post.

It’s a familiar spot for the president.

Roughly 8 in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of inflation, CNN reported this month, a level the network called “extremely rare for a president.” Prices have been pushed higher by the Iran war, which Moody’s estimates is costing households $2,000 each. Only 35 percent of Americans support the war, according to Nate Silver’s polling average.

Trump has also championed AI data centers, even as an NBC News poll found 69 percent of Americans, including 57 percent of Republicans, would oppose one in their area, Forbes reported. The president waved off the opposition, saying communities that reject them are choosing “poverty, crime and squalor.”

On vaccines, just 13 percent of Americans believe childhood shots cause autism, the Annenberg Public Policy Center found. Yet Trump’s health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has repeatedly cast doubt on them. Only 23 percent of Americans view Kennedy favorably.

Public appetite for broadcast executions hasn’t changed much in decades. In 2001, 73 percent of Americans told Pew that Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh’s execution should not be televised.
