“My love for fashion has been with me since I was a child,” Giovanna Ciampitti said in Italian. “There isn’t one specific thing driving it — it’s really about love for myself and dressing up.”
I spotted Ciampitti on a Friday in early October standing on a train platform with matching yellow suitcases at Gatwick Airport, outside London. Wearing a black, green and yellow Adidas Y-3 jacket that doubled as a dress, along with a bag and Tabi boots from Maison Margiela, she was clearly the most fashionable passenger aboard the Thameslink. By chance, we disembarked at the same stop in London, where I then had the opportunity to ask her about her outfit.
Ciampitti, 58, lives in Florence, Italy, and works as an account manager. She had just arrived in London to visit her son, who recently moved to the city for college. She said that her travel outfit that day reflected her usual style of dress; she doesn’t pull out the Tabis only for special occasions, in other words. She counted Margiela as one of her favorite brands alongside a few Japanese designers, including Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto.
“I love the essential line of the Japanese style,” she said. “And I love mixing and matching them. Nothing specific, really.”
