Donald Trump has lost independent voters, and according to the New Republic’s Greg Sargent, the press is missing the whole story.
“It’s a big, undercovered story. His numbers with independents are just absolutely terrible,” Sargent told Aaron Rupar and Thor Benson of Public Notice in an interview published Saturday.
Sargent cited a New York Times poll that found 68 percent of independents disapprove of Trump’s job performance.
“Incredibly, 60 percent of independents disapprove strongly,” he said. “I genuinely don’t know if any president has equaled that in the past. I suspect probably not.”
He said he doesn’t understand why more news analyses aren’t pointing it out.
“I mean, this is the center of the electorate completely turning on Trump,” Sargent said. “Independents are critical in midterm elections. So that collapse is potentially going to be extremely significant to what happens this fall.”
Public Notice said the shift is a major reason Democrats have a shot in states that were “unthinkable as recently as two years ago,” including Nebraska, Kansas and South Carolina.
Sargent sees something bigger than one bad cycle.
“If you look at what the data itself is showing us, it sure looks like we’re in the process of seeing a fairly major repudiation of Trump and the deeper ideologies that he represents,” he said.
The interview comes as Republicans are already playing defense. The party is spending millions to shore up Senate seats in Texas and South Carolina three weeks before Election Day.
