President Donald Trump is running into a big problem as he tries to campaign for midterm candidates, MS NOW’s Ari Melber said on Wednesday: a problem that was laid out all too clearly in the classic film “Mean Girls.”
“Trump [is] trying to go to red states like Ohio and Nebraska,” said Melber. But at the moment, he’s in Texas, “where the Republican governor has been avoiding even being seen with Donald Trump at that planned rally. You know it’s bad when the Texas governor doesn’t want to be seen with Trump in his home state” — after all, he said, Gov. Greg Abbott kept close to Trump in 2020.
“In a telling rebuke to Trump for tonight’s rally in San Antonio, Abbott is blowing off that midterm rally and saying he has a scheduling conflict, an excuse so vague and obvious it’s kind of a red state version of Trump being turned into Regina George, the once allegedly popular it girl who is later exposed in the story as a toxic mean girl who turns out to be perhaps the worst sin. Unpopular.”
“Well, in this pop culture parallel, I can tell you that Governor Abbott would be Karen Smith. Trump would be Regina George as she loses her fiefdom,” said Melber.
Trump is currently trying to boost Ken Paxton, the GOP Senate candidate who in polls has been struggling against Democratic opponent James Talarico despite a huge infusion of cash from Republican groups.
And all of this could just be the start, said Melber — since voters, too, are not far behind the abandonment of Trump.
“When it’s clear that the queen bee’s power is fading, the people may be quick to rise up because they never respected that leader to begin with,” said Melber. “You don’t need the news to tell you that’s what happened to Regina George. But it’s a larger parallel throughout our history. It’s also what happened to King Louis XVI, which is why we still hear chants of No Kings in this country, maybe No Regina Georges, No Kings, and No More Autocratic Politics.”
