A close adviser to President Donald Trump shared new details Wednesday on Republicans’ sentiment heading into the midterms, telling Zeteo bluntly: “It’s looking bad.”
“F— a duck,” the adviser said, summing up what Zeteo described as “the mood coming from so, so, so many national and state Republican Party officials, political operatives, GOP candidates and Trumpland bigwigs.”
The adviser’s grim outlook extended beyond Republicans’ electoral prospects next month to the possibility that the GOP’s “election-corrupting schemes” were “going to fail,” Zeteo reported.
As reported by Axios Tuesday, House GOP leaders have started to openly acknowledge that Trump’s mid-decade redistricting blitz designed to bolster Republicans’ chances in the midterms “didn’t work out as well as they’d hoped.” Originally expected to net Republicans an additional 13 seats in the House, the redistricting push is now projected to gain only four seats.
Additionally, Republicans’ spending edge heading into the midterms was partially botched due to a series of poorly timed ad purchases, The Washington Post reported Wednesday, forcing Republicans to spend more campaign cash for less reach.
“All the Republican Party wanted to do this year was rig the midterm elections after Trump told them to launch a mid-decade gerrymandering war, then walk away scot-free with some extra wins under their belt,” Zeteo’s report reads. “Turns out, life may have other plans for them.”
According to “several prominent GOP operatives and Trump advisers” who spoke with Zeteo, GOP private polling and other data have increasingly suggested that the mid-decade redistricting in Texas may have “dummymandered” Republicans into losing House seats they otherwise were likely to hold. The Trump administration’s aggressive deportation policies, Zeteo noted, didn’t help either.
“Who could have foreseen that intentionally making a crucial voting bloc poorer and less safe would cause those voters to get mad?” Zeteo’s Asawin Suebsaeng wrote.
“The pervasive and deepening freakout on the American right is extremely real, in part because their own internal polling is telling them to be afraid of losing the House and quite possibly the Senate too.”
