President Donald Trump sparked immediate alarm Tuesday after teasing mysterious “big surprises” coming within weeks while praising White House budget chief Russ Vought.
“We have some big surprises coming up in another few weeks, right, Russ?” Trump said during a speech in Baltimore, calling Vought “fantastic.”
“He’s gonna be one of the very important people in the history of our country. He’s got some great things happening,” the president added.
The vague promise was made during Trump’s stop in Baltimore to announce a new submarine manufacturing facility. It quickly set off fears among critics who viewed the timing — just weeks before the midterm elections — as a chilling warning.
Fox News’ Jessica Tarlov, co-host of “The Five,” laid out what she took the comments to mean.
“Between this and his ‘midterm surprise,’ the time to prepare for him to try to steal an election is now,” she wrote on social media.
“Very, very frightening,” writer Polly Sigh posted on X.
Progressive political commentator Brian Tyler Cohen urged voters not to be intimidated by Trump’s remarks.
“Trump is trying to depress turnout,” Cohen wrote. “Don’t give him the satisfaction of scaring you into submission,” he added. “Let it redouble your efforts to defeat him by an unmistakable margin.”
Much of the concern Tuesday centered on Vought and his work as a key architect of Project 2025, which many commentators on social media pointed out Trump repeatedly attempted to distance himself from during the 2024 campaign.
“Trump wants to steal the midterms,” journalist Pedro L. Gonzalez wrote in an X post. “And lunatics like Russ Vought would absolutely be willing to help him do it.”
Melanie D’Arrigo, executive director of the Campaign for New York Health, accused Trump of “shouting the quiet part out loud.”
“Trump wants to rig the election,” she bluntly told her followers.
The political commentary account The Tennessee Holler summed up the reaction: “Ominous.”
