Uptick in hate crimes, antisemitic attacks continues even as NYC hits historic lows in major crimes

Murders and shootings in the Big Apple have continued to hit historic lows so far this year, but hate crimes including antisemitic incidents are only soaring in the five boroughs, new NYPD crime stats reveal.

Police said hate crimes jumped by nearly 13% over the first nine months of the year compared to the same period in past years, with anti-Jewish incidents accounting for more than half of them — marring otherwise stellar city crime stats that show major crimes continuing to dip in recent years.

The dismal news came as a new poll surfaced showing more than half of Jewish voters in the city fear for their safety, with a troubling 42% saying they’ve been verbally harassed.

“Half of Jews saying they feel unsafe is an alarming figure,” said Bradley Honan, CEO of the Honan Strategy Group pollsters. ‘“Fifty five percent of Jewish voters say it has gotten worse since October 7th.”

Jewish New Yorkers said in the survey they have even changed their daily routines to avoid trouble.

NYPD Comissioner Jessica Tisch, who is Jewish, told reporters in announcing the NYPD figures, “The most striking trend continues to be antisemitic hate crimes.

“Throughout this year, 53% of all confirmed hate crimes have targeted Jewish New Yorkers, despite Jews making up only roughly 10 percent of the city’s population,” she said.

“Those numbers are deeply concerning,” Tisch said. “On the eve of the third anniversary of Oct. 7th, we renew our pledge to Jewish institutions that they will not be left to protect themselves without a strong partner in the NYPD.”

Police recorded 463 hate crimes through the end of September this year, up from 410 over the same time span last year, with 245, or nearly 53%, classified of them identified as anti-Jewish, the data show.

Those statistics follow a now-familiar pattern that has seen major crimes continuing to dip in recent years while hate crime and antisemitic incidents keep edging upward, particularly since the Hamas terror attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, sparked an Israeli assault on Gaza.

A startling 59% of the Jewish voters told the pollsters it is now unsafe for them at public protests — double the percentage of  non-Jewish voters.

Half of those polled also said it is unsafe to wear a kippah or Star of David.

The survey found that 40% of Jewish voters believe college campuses are unsafe for Jews, while 57% said they were safe.

Shockingly, one in four Jews said they hid their Jewish identity online or at work, while 36% have stopped wearing Jewish symbols, according to the findings.

One in three Jewish voters said they witnessed or personally experienced an antisemitic incident in the five boroughs in the past year, nearly triple the 12% rate of non-Jewish voters, according to Honan.

In terms of the latest NYPD stats, Mayor Zohran Mamdani noted that gender-based crimes jumped by 122% over the first nine months of the year, while anti-Hispanic crimes increased 83.3% and anti-Muslim crimes were up 77.8%.

The grim numbers cast a shadow on what has otherwise been an impressive performance by the NYPD to make the five boroughs safer than they’ve ever been, according to the stats.

Police recorded 73 murders so far this year, a near 20% dip over the 91 in the same span last year — breaking the record low of 215 set in 2017 for the fewest murders for the period.

The number of shootings meanwhile dropped to 167 from 216, and the number of shooting victims went down to 213 from 297, a 28% decrease, the numbers show.

The nine-month shootings numbers broke the previous record low record set in 2025, and the number of gunshot victims beat out the previous low set 2018 and matched last year.

Meanwhile, burglaries dropped to 8,316 from 9,636 in the same period compared to last year, a 13.7% dip, robberies were down to 10,080 from 11,478, or nearly 14%, auto theft decreased to 9,110 compared to 10,394, for a 12.2% drop, and auto thefts were down nearly 6%, to 33,939 from 36,033.

Also down were crimes in public housing, which dipped 6.5%.

Subway crimes, which have long been a serious concern for straphangers, edged up slightly by 0.9%, to 1,628 reported incidents this year compared to 1,613 last year.

The only two other blemishes on the numbers were a slight 0.2% increase in felony assaults, or 22,781 this year compared to 22,726 last year, and 3.7% increase in rapes — 1,594 this year compared to 1,537 last year, a blip that cops attribute to a recently expanded definition of rape under state law.
