Lucas Duplan’s Room Tone turns the dance floor into a studio

Picture a club at 1 a.m., the exact moment a set stops being background noise and starts feeling like something that could only be happening right there, to that specific room of strangers. The DJ drops something unfamiliar, a transition nobody’s heard before, and for four minutes the track exists only in that space. By morning it’s gone. No upload, no trace beyond whoever happened to be standing there.

Lucas Duplan, the Los Angeles-based DJ and music producer, has built his reputation on exactly that kind of disappearance. A Lucas Duplan set contains at least one edit made for that specific room and that specific crowd, and by his own account, it’s deleted afterward. So it’s worth asking what happens when that same instinct gets pointed at a debut EP, a format defined by permanence, repeatability, and infinite streams. Room Tone is Duplan’s attempt to answer that question, and the answer isn’t obvious or comfortable.

Where the question started

Duplan’s fixation with why a listener picks one track over another didn’t start behind a DJ booth. It started in Echo Park, where his father repaired jukeboxes for dive bars along Sunset and brought home the 45s that got skipped most often.

“The jukeboxes, honestly,” he says of what shaped his ear. “My dad would bring home the 45s that got skipped the most, the songs nobody chose, and I became obsessed with why.” That question, he adds, “is still my entire philosophy as a producer.”

He started producing at 16 years old, but the more revealing formation happened later, in a room that emptied. A 2023 showcase went badly enough that Duplan says he cleared the floor in eight minutes. Rather than disappear, he sent the promoter a breakdown of what he’d misread and asked for another chance. What followed was a standing Tuesday slot. The slot wasn’t glamorous, but it gave Duplan repetition, the same room, week after week, to test how small sequencing and production choices changed a crowd’s behavior in real time.

That slot produced the working principle Duplan now uses to describe his approach to Lucas Duplan live sets: “Most DJs curate; I manufacture on-site.” It’s a meaningful distinction in a genre where selection often gets conflated with authorship. For Duplan, the room itself, its acoustics, its crowd, its unpredictability, functions as an instrument and the edits built inside that environment are treated as unrepeatable by design.

A series, not a snapshot

That instinct toward impermanence sits uneasily against Room Tone, which Duplan envisions less as a single release than the start of a series, with future installments built live inside different iconic Los Angeles rooms.

Debut single “Skipped 45” carries the throughline directly back to those jukebox 45s nobody wanted, and the reconstruction skills behind it trace to a moment of necessity: unable to source a vinyl-only track a couple had requested, Duplan rebuilt it from stems by ear overnight. That process, part edit, part reconstruction, has become inseparable from how he now approaches production.

The real question Room Tone raises is whether the EP can hold onto what made those live edits work. Duplan has spent his career arguing that a track is inseparable from the room it was born in. A streaming release asks the opposite: that the track survive every room it’s played in. Room Tone doesn’t resolve that tension so much as sit inside it, and that tension, more than any single track, is what makes it worth hearing.
