Instinct joined the chat: The startup is bringing its AI agents to your group DMs

  • After your inbox, errands, and shopping list, Instinct is now muscling into the group chat.
  • Its new group agent can plan trips, split ticket costs, coordinate carpools, and more.
  • The launch raises fresh privacy questions after users flagged prior agent missteps.

Instinct came for your inbox, your errands, and your shopping list — now it’s wading into the wild west of your group chat.

Noah Shinn, the CEO of the personal AI agent startup, said in an X post on Monday that early-access users can now add Instinct to group chats, where it can help coordinate plans, settle logistics, and take actions for several people at once.

The pitch is to end the familiar group-chat spiral: having to catch up on dozens of unread messages, competing restaurant suggestions, and the one friend who never answers whether they can make it to drinks on Friday.

Instinct said its agent can plan a weekend trip around everyone’s arrival times, work out roommate logistics, organize carpools, manage fantasy sports leagues, and keep track of who is bringing what to Thanksgiving.

It can also try to buy tickets as soon as they go on sale, split the cost, and send one to each person.

Unlike in a standard chat with Instinct, not everyone in the group needs an account. A new group-specific Instinct joins the conversation and works for the whole group, Shinn said.

“Your friends don’t even need Instinct to join in,” Shinn wrote.

The feature comes as Instinct and other personal AI agents face mounting questions from early users about privacy, security, and unwanted actions.

Business Insider previously reported that Instinct users had raised concerns about the agent accessing accounts, giving inaccurate explanations of its actions, and sending unsolicited shopping recommendations based on details from earlier conversations.

In one case, Veris AI CEO Mehdi Jamei said Instinct read a one-time login code from his connected Gmail account to cancel event RSVPs without first asking him.

When he challenged the agent, Jamei said it acknowledged that it had reported an assumption as fact about how it had accessed his Luma account.

Another user, Pritak Patel, said the agent appeared to describe a financial document with personal details that did not belong to him after he sent it a text-only link.

Shinn later said the incident was a hallucination, rather than a data leak, and said Instinct had added a system intended to catch such errors before the agent responds or takes action.

Group chats could complicate those concerns.

An agent helping organize a trip might need to compare calendars, collect payments, buy tickets, and message several people — while handling personal information and permissions that belong to different users.

Instinct said it has introduced controls intended to limit that risk.

A user’s personal agent must ask before connecting to a group agent, while the group agent has no direct access to individual accounts.

If someone new joins the group, pending replies from a personal Instinct are held until the user authorizes sharing with the expanded chat, Shinn said.

“Your personal Instinct asks before connecting with the group’s Instinct,” Shinn wrote. “You choose which groups to trust and can remove trust at any time.”
