President Donald Trump faces a midterm backlash that includes voters from his own party, according to University of Virginia political analyst Larry Sabato.
Speaking on “Scott MacFarland Reports,” Sabato said he sees warning signs extending into MAGA-fied states that backed Trump.
“Even though these are conservative pro-Trump states, you have a critical mass of people — Democrats, independents, but especially a slice of Republicans — who want to send Trump and the Republican Congress a message,” Sabato said.
“And you don’t see that all that often,” he added.
Although the size remains uncertain, Sabato predicts a Democratic wave fueled by Republicans ready to rebuke Trump.
“I tend to think it will be bigger rather than smaller,” Sabato said.
Republican spending decisions offer another clue. MacFarland reported Monday that outside GOP Senate money is shifting from North Carolina to Kansas, a race he says was “off the radar” just months ago.
“Kansas is more competitive than North Carolina,” Sabato told him. “Incredibly.” Sabato pointed out that parties direct money toward races where their internal polling reveals trouble.
“They know that what was expected to happen isn’t happening, so they’re not going to waste their money,” he said.
Exactly how hard voters deliver that message to Trump will likely become clearer in the campaign’s final days, according to Sabato. A recent New York Times/Siena poll found the Kansas race tied.
“I’ve seen a number of tsunamis, and they tend to build in the last 10 days,” he concluded.
