A Democratic midterm victory could leave the party facing a dangerous political trap ahead of 2028, conservative commentator Jonathan V. Last warned Monday.
Writing in The Bulwark, Last laid out a “doomsday scenario” with a blunt warning: “Even if Democrats crush the midterms, we’re in a world of trouble.”
“Because even if Democrats schlong Trump in four weeks, we are staring down the barrel of something very, very dangerous,” he wrote.
Last, an anti-Trump conservative and editor at The Bulwark, bolstered his argument by telling readers that winning control of Congress would give Republicans a convenient target to blame, which could potentially help President Donald Trump’s successor win the White House.
“Nowhere is it written that a Democrat wins in 2028,” he noted. “I’ll go further: If the Democrats control the Senate, it helps the Republican presidential candidate in 2028.”
He suggested JD Vance, Donald Trump Jr. or Tucker Carlson could blame a Democratic Congress for poor outcomes and campaign against the “establishment.”
Last pointed to a Bulwark focus group featuring Michigan Trump voters unhappy with the president’s performance. Their dissatisfaction, he argued, does not guarantee a Democratic vote.
“I feel like I’m just picking between fascists and communists at this point. So it’s like, whatever,” one participant said, according to the report.
He concluded his analysis Monday by urging Democrats against viewing strong results in November as proof that the presidency will follow.
“So don’t get complacent if Democrats pull off a miracle and wind up with some crazy number of Senate seats,” he wrote. “It’s all gas, no brakes, from here to the wire.”
