With about a month left before the midterms, a panel on MS NOW said early Sunday morning that the clearest sign of a possible Democratic wave is a campaign stop in Mississippi.
The panel pointed to Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.), one of the most prominent Black Democrats in the country, campaigning for the party’s Senate candidate in Mississippi.
“If such a powerful and prominent Democrat could be out, you know, in Mississippi thinking that there’s an impact, and what he’s doing is he’s driving Black voters to the polls,” Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Eugene Robinson said. “I think that’s going to be a huge thing.”
“Clyburn in Mississippi is the biggest tell,” host Jonathan Capehart said.
Fellow panelist journalist Scott MacFarlane said he spent part of the week talking to Senate candidates he “didn’t expect to talk to 30 days out.” They included Mississippi Democrat Scott Colom, who is challenging Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, and an independent trying to unseat Sen. Mike Rounds in South Dakota.
According to MacFarlane, these were signals of a potential “big wave” from Democrats.
MacFarlane said Colom argues Mississippi has more in common with Georgia than with the rest of the Deep South because of its large Black population and its potential for turnout.
“I’m a cheap date,” the panelist quoted Colom as saying. “The money goes far here in Mississippi, and we have voters to mobilize.”
