President Donald Trump is preparing to flood the airwaves with “many more” taxpayer-funded ads as part of his strategy to combat rising Republican anxiety over the midterms, according to new CNN reporting.
CNN correspondent Arlette Saenz reported Friday that Trump believes what is “plaguing” Republican candidates is a “messaging problem.”
Trump’s solution, Saenz said, is a two-pronged approach: campaign in reliably red states and “flood the airwaves.”
“And that is part of the reason why President Trump and the Trump administration has been running those taxpayer-funded ads promoting the president and his policies,” Saenz said. “Now, at least three of those ads have aired so far, but CNN has learned that there are many more in the pipeline ready to go.”
The White House has defended the TV spots as public service announcements, and “clearly not campaign ads.” But Saenz noted they have drawn criticism from both Democrats and Republicans questioning the use of taxpayer money.
Trump, meanwhile, continued his campaign blitz Friday in Oklahoma before heading to Alabama. But Saenz cautioned that Republicans still face “very real headwinds” heading into November, noting that Trump’s approval rating is at a low point and Friday’s jobs report delivered more difficult economic news.
“And this comes even as there is rising anxiety among some Republicans about their ability to hold not just the House but also the Senate,” she concluded.
