The Best Movies and TV Shows Coming to AMC+, Hulu, Apple TV and More in October

Every month, streaming services add movies and TV shows to their libraries. Here are our picks for some of October’s most promising new titles. (Note: Streaming services occasionally change schedules without giving notice. For more recommendations on what to stream, sign up for our Watching newsletter here.)

New to Amazon Prime Video

‘Carrie’ Season 1 Starts streaming: Oct. 7

The writer-director Mike Flanagan has delivered some creative and artful adaptations of Stephen King stories, with movies like “Gerald’s Game” and “The Life of Chuck.” Flanagan’s new TV series takes a unique approach to King’s 1974 debut novel “Carrie,” expanding the book’s basic plot and themes into a larger narrative with a modern setting. Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, a teenager who has been home-schooled by her strict religious mother (Samantha Sloyan). When Carrie’s father dies in an accident and her mother has to get a job, the sheltered Carrie goes to high school for the first time, where she deals with bullies, the wonders and dangers of the internet, and the relative strangeness of a secular education, Carrie also experiences an awakening of her latent telekinetic abilities, discovering that social misfits can have their own kind of power.

‘Love of Your Life’ Starts streaming: Oct. 14

Margaret Qualley plays Maya, a young woman enduring an up-and-down decade in this romantic drama, which is about what happens when a “happily ever after” unexpectedly slips away. Maya, a Boston nurse, falls deeply in love with Charlie (Gabriel Basso), but circumstances tear the couple apart. Maya embarks on a journey of self-discovery, trying to find out if she can open herself up again to another relationship. Directed by the Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison, “Love of Your Life” features striking imagery shot around the world. It also has an excellent supporting cast. Aaron Pierre plays a charming Londoner who turns Maya’s head; Patrick Schwarzenegger plays the platonic male friend who knows Maya better than anybody; and Catherine Keener plays Charlie’s acerbic mother, who can shatter anyone’s confidence with one withering glance.

Zeta-Jones plays Jackie Price, a prominent international art dealer who secretly made her fortune as a drug smuggler. Jackie finds her past catching up with her when she learns that the Seven Demons assassin squad has been hired to kill her. Unwilling to wait around to die, Jackie partners up with her nervous lawyer (Daniel Ings) and sets out to kill the Demons, one by one. In the process, she rediscovers the thrills of her misspent youth — and reckons with her past mistakes.

‘Yaga’ Starts streaming: Oct. 23

Adapted by the showrunner Kat Sandler from her own stage play, this twisted, supernaturally tinged mystery series is set in Whitlock, a picturesque coastal Canadian town rocked by the recent disappearance of one of its wealthiest young residents, Henry Park (Hudson Williams). The Park family hires a brash private detective named Rapp (Noah Reid), who quickly irritates Carson (Clark Backo), a sharp local cop who resents the rich and does not think this case deserves a lot of attention. Neither Rapp nor Carson may be up to challenge of dealing with Katherine (Carrie-Anne Moss), a sly professor who was one of the last people to see Henry alive, and whose fascination with the legends of the child-eating witch Baba Yaga may hold the key to understanding the strange goings-on in Whitlock.

Directed by the accomplished documentary filmmaker Jennifer Peedom (“Sherpa,” “Mountain”), “Tenzing” uses a jumbled timeline to compare and contrast Norgay’s experiences on the expedition with his hardscrabble upbringing in Nepal. He was a passionate mountaineer who, because of his race and his social class, kept having to prove himself to other climbers. He has since become disconnected emotionally from his past and uncertain about what his future should be. When Vision is chased out of hiding by bounty hunters, he goes on the run with a teenager (Ruaridh Mollica) who may be his reincarnated son. As Carla and Morgan each maneuver to get the upper hand — and potentially the larger payday — their expensive, outwardly classy lawyers deploy every underhanded tactic they can imagine. “War” satirizes the state of family law and personal injury law in an age where winning in the court of public opinion is as important as winning over a jury.

Then he meets Ginger (Betty Gilpin), a public defender who tips him off to some possible malfeasance in the local prison system. This gift means that Pavi is the Avatar, her civilization’s potential savior. ‘Crystal Lake’ Season 1 Starts streaming: Oct. 15

The production company A24 (frequent purveyor of hip horror cinema) and the writer Brad Caleb Kane are behind “Crystal Lake,” which takes place in the years immediately before the original “Friday the 13th” film. Linda Cardellini plays Pamela Voorhees, who at the start of the story is raising her bright and enthusiastic young son Jason (Callum Vinson), encouraging him to ignore the boys and girls at his summer camp who make fun of him. Then tragedy strikes and Pamela becomes grimly determined to hold the responsible parties accountable — sometimes with a machete in her hand. But she and Jason have a secret past of their own, which could be exposed by Pamela’s rampage.
