Londoners will soon be able to stroll down the center of Oxford Street without cars whizzing by them. A section of the street, the city’s main shopping artery, will be car-free starting on Oct. 26.
Oxford Street has lived many lives since the Romans first laid out a road here early in the first millennium, when they called the city “Londinium.” For centuries, locals and tourists have come to bargain-hunt and window-shop along Britain’s most famous shopping street.
