The family of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen shot and killed by a federal immigration agent in Minneapolis in January, has sued President Donald Trump’s administration.
A pair of lawsuits seeking damages and a jury trial accuse administration officials of negligence and of violating the civil rights of Good and other Minneapolis residents, reported Reuters.
The suits are among the first major civil challenges to Operation Metro Surge, the deportation sweep that sent thousands of immigration agents onto Minnesota streets last winter.
Good, 37, was killed on Jan. 7 while sitting in her car during one of the city’s daily protests against the masked federal agents. Her wife had joined her at the protest.
Videos of the shooting circulated widely showing ICE agent Jonathan Ross walking around Good’s car, which was partly blocking the road, while recording on his phone.
Good can be heard telling him, “That’s fine, dude, I’m not mad at you.”
A second agent then ordered her out of the vehicle, and Good briefly backed up before shifting forward and turning the wheel, apparently trying to leave. Ross, standing near the front of the car, shouted “Whoa!” and fired. He struck her three times, including once in the head.
Senior administration officials initially called Good a “domestic terrorist” and the Justice Department barred federal prosecutors in Minneapolis from investigating the agents involved, and at least six of those prosecutors resigned in protest.
No agent has been charged in Good’s death.
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty is investigating Good’s killing and the later fatal shooting of VA nurse Alex Pretti under state law. Her office says federal officials have refused to share evidence, and the Department of Homeland Security has defended the agents’ actions as justified.
Becca Good and other relatives were scheduled to speak to reporters later Thursday.
