A 59-year-old man was fatally stabbed Wednesday evening in a random rush-hour attack on a subway train in Queens, the police said.
The man, Mesias Lojano, of Corona, was on a northbound J train at about 5:30 p.m., the police said, when he was repeatedly stabbed by another passenger.
Emergency services workers responded when the train stopped at the Woodhaven Boulevard station and brought Mr. Lojano to the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
The attacker, referred to in an internal police report as emotionally disturbed, was taken into custody after leaving the station, the police said. He was identified on Thursday as 25-year-old Jyrell Thomas, and charged with murder and possession of a weapon. He was awaiting arraignment on Thursday. It was unclear whether Mr. Thomas, who is from the Bronx, had a lawyer.
The stabbing occurred after the two men, who did not know each other, got into an argument, according to the internal police report. It was unclear what touched off the dispute.
As of Wednesday, there had been at least six homicides in the subway so far this year, compared with three in the same period in 2025, according to police data.
Overall, there have been fewer murders in New York City this year, down 21 percent from the same period last year, police data shows, and total crime in the transit system was essentially flat through Sunday compared with the same period last year.
