A man shot three co-workers at a Virginia equipment rental business on Wednesday, killing two of them, before fatally shooting himself after a standoff with the police, the authorities said.
The Manassas City Police Department received a call at 7:11 a.m. reporting a shooting at a United Rentals location in Manassas, Va., about 30 miles southwest of Washington, Douglas Keen, the department’s chief, said at a news conference. The gunman, later identified as Marvin Grant, 37, pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot three people after “an altercation,” Chief Keen said.
Mr. Grant had told a co-worker that morning that “three people are going to die,” according to Chief Keen. But his motive remained unclear.
All three people who were shot were taken to nearby hospitals. Two of them, Richard Lamont, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33, died. The third victim, whose name was not released, was in stable condition, according to a statement from the Virginia State Police.
By about 8:20 a.m., investigators had identified the gunman and begun searching for his silver Toyota Camry. A state trooper spotted the vehicle heading south on Interstate 81, Chief Keen said.
After a police pursuit, Mr. Grant stopped and got out of the car, the state police said. A negotiator was brought in to try to persuade him to surrender, but he shot himself at 10:30 a.m., the state police said.
Mr. Grant was taken to a hospital, where he died.
“We’ve got to figure out what happened here and what caused this,” Chief Keen said, adding, “Our community is still hurting, the family of United Rentals is still hurting, the families of the victims are still hurting.”
