Watchdog demands Trump DHS put up or shut up on voting claims in court

Watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is pressing forward with litigation demanding the Department of Homeland Security hand over the information supporting their claims about a vast epidemic of noncitizens illegally voting.

The document was flagged on X by Meidas Touch reporter Scott MacFarlane Wednesday.

In the filing, CREW stated that they are seeking records dating back to March “sufficient to show the methodology, criteria, and analytical process used to generate the following numerical claims made publicly by DHS and the President on or about July 16 and 17, 2026 regarding non-citizens registered to vote.”

Among the claims they are seeking verification for are “The claim that over 250,000 non-citizens are illegally registered to vote in California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nevada; The state-specific figures of 190,832 (California), 35,152 (New Jersey), 15,903 (Nevada), and 14,576 (Pennsylvania); The claim that approximately 278,000 non-citizens are registered to vote in federal elections; The figure of 118,003 registrants across the four states whose names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers were said to match non-citizens in DHS records; and the claims that the SAVE system enabled participating states to identify over 400,000 deceased registrants and over 28,000 non- citizen registrants.”

CREW’s request specifically wants “the data sources used to generate these figures; the matching criteria, thresholds, and confidence levels; any code, scripts, queries, models, or algorithms used; any documentation distinguishing ‘potential,’ ‘possible,’ and confirmed matches; and any documented or estimated error, false- positive, or false-negative rates.”

Many of the Trump administration’s efforts to identify noncitizens on voter rolls have spectacularly fallen apart. For instance, the initial 16,000 figure for Nevada was ultimately narrowed down to 185 by DHS — then Nevada checked those 185 people and every single one was a U.S. citizen.
