President Donald Trump made a cryptic remark Wednesday about his political future while defending his Republican midterm convention against criticism from Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton.
Paxton reportedly told conservative donors in a private conversation that Trump’s September convention in Dallas hurt Republican candidates, according to audio obtained by The New York Times.
Asked in the Oval Office about Paxton’s reported complaint, Trump said he had not heard it and immediately defended the event.
“Well, I haven’t heard that, but I can tell you that the convention was amazing,” Trump said, claiming it drew 107 million viewers and far outpaced an NFL game.
“This was a national convention — midterm convention — never been done before,” Trump said.
He then offered an unusual aside after suggesting that a similar midterm convention would be held again.
“Somebody said it won’t do as well because I won’t be around,” Trump said. “But I’ll be around in some form. I don’t know what form I’m going to be around in.”
The president did not elaborate on what exactly he meant, but repeatedly emphasized that the two-day event “was the most watched thing on television.”
“It’s possible it can be true,” he admitted about Paxton’s comments. “But other people were helped greatly.”
