President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged Wednesday the competing pressures surrounding his immigration policies, as his party grapples with public anger over his deportation campaign while his base demands even more aggressive enforcement.
“And frankly, it’s the hardest job that I’ve had, the hardest job, because they’ll say ‘You’re too tough’ or ‘You’re too soft,’” Trump said. “Get tougher, get softer. No matter what you do. It’s always tough.”
Trump’s immigration policies have veered between escalating arrests and backing away from the political fallout. But he hasn’t previously discussed that so publicly. He has said that he won the 2024 election because of his plans to strengthen the border, but as the midterms approach, he has said his advisers have told him not to talk about the issue.
Trump spoke at a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at the White House on Wednesday. He convened the gathering in the East Room as polls show a sharp decline in his support among Hispanic voters, who were a key part of the coalition that helped him win the White House in 2024.
