OpenAI’s new AI agents are meant to help people get work done. Instead, their first job may be to explain that they’re not a Chinese AI lab, a small fashion retailer, or Elon Musk’s Grok.
At its DevDay event on Tuesday, OpenAI unveiled Dots, a fleet of always-on AI assistants that can keep working across projects after a user closes the chat. In CEO Sam Altman’s presentation, the agents appeared as colorful, cartoonish blob avatars.
Judging by the internet’s response after the name was unveiled, OpenAI’s new product name is also extremely difficult to look up.
For one, it’s already associated with two Chinese AI companies. Last year, social media company RedNote spun out an AI group called Dots Studio, which makes vision language models. In April 2025, another company, Shanghai Shengdongshizhang Technology, filed a US trademark application for DOTS, covering AI chatbot and personal-assistant software, making OpenAI’s new agent name a particularly on-the-nose collision.
Then there’s Dots, which appears to be a small women’s fashion company. Its Instagram page, which redirects visitors to dots.com, was quickly invaded by people who said that OpenAI’s new product could accidentally send a windfall its way.
“How much did open ai pay you guys?” one person asked in a comment on Instagram “Bro gonna get crazy money,” wrote another. On a separate post, commenters asked, “Is this ChatGPT?” and one optimist advised the company not to sell its domain for less than $1 million.
A well-timed jab
Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI could also benefit from the confusion if people mistype the name.
The web address dot.com sends visitors somewhere else entirely: a download page for SpaceXAI’s Grok Bot, its own AI agent system. On Tuesday, that led some X users to accuse Musk’s AI company of being an all-time petty troll. One widely shared post laid out the joke: “OpenAI just announced Dots. SpaceXAI bought Dot.com.”

However, domain ownership records show that dot.com’s ownership was updated on July 28, months before OpenAI unveiled Dots. SpaceXAI has not publicly explained why it acquired the address, leaving the internet free to interpret its redirect to Grok Bot as a particularly well-timed jab at OpenAI.
SpaceXAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
The internet’s accusations also stem from the rivalry between the two AI companies. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015, left its board in 2018, and later started xAI, now part of SpaceXAI. He has also sued OpenAI and Altman over the company’s move toward a for-profit structure.
