CNN’s Erin Burnetttore into Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) on Tuesday after his attempted “gotcha moment” of former special counsel Jack Smith backfired spectacularly during a Senate hearing.
Schmitt accused Smith of lying about whether he attended an Atlanta Hawks game in February 2024, suggesting the trip could connect him to Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. “I think you’ve already perjured yourself,” Schmitt told him before later calling Smith a “total dirtbag.”
“That was, you know, the killer moment, the mic-drop moment,” Burnett said on CNN’s “OutFront.” “Schmitt thought he had Jack Smith. But he didn’t because Smith was not at the Hawks game.”
“He just wasn’t,” she added.
Smith instead said he recalled attending a University of Maryland basketball game featuring Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in College Park, Maryland — not Atlanta.
Burnett then brought the receipts as she aired footage from the Feb. 3, 2024, Iowa-Maryland game showing Smith sitting in the stands.
“And there he is,” Burnett said. “There is Jack Smith. So I guess we know what game the text was about.”
CNN’s Lauren Fox later reported that Schmitt did not explicitly apologize for the mix-up on Tuesday when asked about it by reporters. He instead joked that Smith was apparently a Caitlin Clark fan.
But Burnett didn’t see the humor.
“The implications from it were nasty and involved lying under oath,” she said. “So it would seem that it’s more than a joke.”
