Eric Schmitt’s attempt to play off his stunning blunder immediately backfires: ‘No sauce’

Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) found himself humiliated on Tuesday at the hearing with former special counsel Jack Smith, when he tried to corner Smith in supposed “perjury” that he hadn’t been in Atlanta by providing texts of him being at a “Hawks” basketball game, when in fact he had been at an Iowa Hawkeyes college away game in Maryland.

Not to be humbled in public, Schmitt publicly denied making a mistake to TMZ reporters, and took to X to play it off, posting, “Who knew Jack Smith was a Caitlin Clark fan?”

Schmitt’s reaction didn’t do him any favors, with commenters on social media drowning him in mockery.

“This is the lamest response to this. No sauce at all,” wrote Tahra Hoops of the Chamber of Progress.

“After today, I don’t think you get to lecture us about men and women’s sports anymore,” wrote Jacob Long, a communications official for the Texas Democratic Party.

“Bro, just apologize like a grown-up…” wrote Ben Meiselas of Meidas Touch.

“Catholics say ‘through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault’ at every Mass,” wrote former congressional candidate and religion writer Christopher Hale. “A Catholic Senator can’t manage a simple ‘I’m sorry’ to the man he falsely smeared. That’s an embarrassment to our faith.”

“I say this without snark: In times like these, it would be a lot better for society if public figures like Eric Schmitt were willing to just admit they got it wrong instead of doing whatever this is,” wrote Billy Binion of the libertarian Reason magazine.
