  • Today’s tip to get better at work: Become a more confident leader by showing humility.
  • Jamie Dimon advises leaders to encourage open communication and be open to criticism.
  • For decades, he’s left every JPMorgan board meeting so directors can speak freely without him present.

Get better at: Leading

Today’s move

Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, said insecurity ruins CEOs and other leaders.

So instead of acting like you have all the answers, actively aim to create a space where others feel comfortable weighing in and disagreeing.

Why it works

Dimon said that insecure leaders make their reports uncomfortable about bringing them bad news or challenging their ideas. Eventually, this causes leaders to create a bubble around themselves and they become disconnected from what’s going on inside their companies.

Encouraging others to share their perspective, on the other hand, signals humility and confidence in a leader.

Try it today

The next time you meet with your team, end the conversation by asking your peers, “What am I missing?”

Then just listen to what they have to say.

Dimon said that he isn’t offended by complaints and that a secure leader values critical feedback.

The bottom line

Dimon actively encourages his employees to speak up. He said that for decades, he has left every JPMorgan board meeting so directors can talk without him. When executives disagree with him, he has them make their argument directly to the board.
