President Donald Trump’s campaign stops in the run-up to the November midterm elections are likely going to drag down the GOP further, strategist Rick Wilson wrote for his “Against All Enemies” blog on Tuesday — and there’s nothing they can do about it.
The fact that Trump was convinced to hold rallies in deep-red Mobile, Alabama, and Durant, Oklahoma, is proof of that point, Wilson argued.
“Republican candidates are caught in a trap: they don’t want Trump within 1000 miles of their races, and they can’t tell him not to come,” he wrote. “When the principal is an asset, you put him where the votes are. When the principal is a man whose approval sits at roughly 30-33% in the polling averages, you put him somewhere the arena will be full, the crowd will be loud, and no candidate on the ballot is in any danger of losing.” The Durant and Mobile rallies, then, he said, are “rally therapy for sad boy Donnie” that lets him bask in adulation as everything crashes down around him.
A bigger problem for Republicans, said Wilson, is Trump’s support for Byron Donalds in the Florida gubernatorial race, which has now created an impossible situation for the candidate.
The president took to the internet to announce “two Florida rallies for Byron Donalds, which he promised would be ‘SOLD OUT!’ He posted it in a fit of pique after reporting that Donalds had rolled out a new campaign website that dropped the prominent references to Trump’s endorsement, along with the photo of the two of them, from the homepage,” wrote Wilson. The president appeared to do this out of spite for Donalds, who until this point devoutly sucked up to him, and now needs to distance himself.
Even in Florida, which Trump has spent years reshaping in his political image, people are fed up, argued Wilson, as gas approaches $5 a gallon and fights over AI data centers further inflame tensions.
“Trump is so far down into the greasy sluice of his mental decline that he can’t backpedal, even for political survival. He’s argued that communities rejecting data centers could end up ‘backward and poor,’ which is the kind of argument that MAGA influencers would have called elitist if a Democrat said it,” wrote Wilson. “Put that man in front of a microphone in Florida for ninety minutes, and he will say it again, off the cuff, with Donalds standing behind him nodding like a stooge. The ads will have that clip cut, scored, and uploaded before Air Force One wheels up.”
