Firefighters were ready for all types of emergencies during the nor’easter that soaked the Eastern Seaboard this past weekend — including fallen trees, downed wires and flooded streets.
Still, an unexpected call came in on Saturday afternoon in Middletown Township, New Jersey: A doe had tried to run through a metal fence and became trapped.
“It’s not something that we get frequently,” department spokesman Rob Allen said. “… However, we’re prepared for anything.”
Because the volunteer department was expecting a busy weekend — Monmouth County declared a state of emergency — more than 100 firefighters were on call, Allen said. Two crews quickly responded to the property where the doe was stuck.
“They’re our neighbors just as much as the next person,” Allen said about the township’s deer.
Firefighters placed a pink blanket over the doe’s head to protect her from sparks and debris. Then they used an electric saw to cut a bar the doe was stuck in.
The deer, who was uninjured, was free in about 15 minutes and ran toward the woods.
“Even the deer have had enough of this Nor’Easter,” the department wrote on Facebook after the rescue.
