Details on President Donald Trump’s much-hyped Monday announcement were revealed by a White House official ahead of the address, prompting one conservative commentator to label the announcement as a “final pitch” to Iowa, a state where Democrats have steadily closed the gap in recent polling.
According to ABC News, Trump is poised to announce the construction of a new $15 billion steel plant in Iowa, the “first mega-steel plant” built in the nation since the 1960s. According to the White House official, the plant is expected to be producing steel by 2030 and produce roughly 10 million tons of steel a year.
Both the location for the steel mill and timing of the announcement appeared to be no accident, noted conservative commentator and writer Preston Hill.
“Looks like President Trump is making a final pitch to Iowa voters ahead of the midterms with the announcement of the largest steel plant in U.S. history being built in the state,” Hill wrote in a social media post on X Monday.
A former battleground state, Iowa became a GOP stronghold starting in the 2016 election when Trump won the state by more than 9 percentage points, widening that margin further in 2024 to more than 13 percentage points. Recent polling, however, has shown Democratic candidates with “strong chances” to win their respective races in the state.
Analysts have also noted a shift in the rhetoric of prominent Iowa Republicans, perhaps most notably from Sen. Chuck Grassley and Rep. Ashley Hinson; the former for calling on Trump to enact a 1970s-era-style ban on diesel exports, and the latter for calling for Trump’s deeply unpopular war against Iran to come to an “immediate end,” despite having voted against ending the war six times.
