Comedian Amelia Dimoldenberg mocked Ed Sheeran as a “world-famous red-headed puppet” after the hitmaker’s “Free Palestine” controversy with Macklemore.
“I’ve been incredibly privileged to have done so many interviews with people like Idris Elba, Cher and even a world-famous, red-headed puppet with a hand up his ass telling him what to say,” the “Chicken Shop Date” creator said during her “Saturday Night Live UK” opening monologue.
After a photo of Dimoldenberg and Elmo from “Sesame Street” popped up on the screen, she replied, “No, the other one.”
An image of Dimoldenberg and Sheeran, 35, in a 2021 interview from her YouTube “dating” series then appeared on the screen.
Dimoldenberg, 32, stayed quiet as the audience cheered.
A rep for the “Thinking Out Loud” crooner wasn’t immediately available to Page Six for comment.
In Dimoldenberg’s viral show, she conducts interviews, known as “dates,” with celebrities at fried chicken fast food restaurants throughout London.
The talk show host launched her series in 2014 in a bid to find love and learn how to date. However, Dimoldenberg recently announced the end of her series, with the final series premiering on Oct. 2.
Dimoldenberg, meanwhile, chimed in on the Sheeran and Macklemore, 43, controversy after the “Thrift Shop” rapper announced he was dropped as an opener for the remainder of the singer’s Loop Tour following his pro-Palestine speech at the MetLife Stadium show in New Jersey.
“I wanted to stand up here on stages across America and say two words that are near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine,” the hitmaker said at the concert.
Shortly after, Macklemore took to Instagram to share that Sheeran and his team “made the decision to remove [him]” from the tour.
“But before I get into it, I want to say something that should be obvious,” he wrote. “In this moment I think it matters. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim … We have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families.”
Macklemore, born Benjamin Haggerty, explained that the “victims are the Palestinian people … who have been killed, starved, displaced and forced to live through unimaginable violence.”
As for Sheeran, his additional openers, including Finneas, Lukas Graham, Aaron Rowe and Beoga, later announced they were dropping from the tour in solidarity.
Sheeran addressed the rift via Instagram, claiming his shows were threatened to be pulled from several venues if Macklemore wasn’t fired from the tour.
“I spoke with the venues at length all week to try and build a bridge,” the “Perfect” singer said, adding that he tried to “find a mutual resolution for all, but the venue’s and promoter’s decision was final.”
“Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine,” he continued. “Macklemore’s contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me. I would never let down the fans who had made plans, nor would I abandon the touring crew and the other support acts and musicians who rely on me for work and to make a living.”
Sheeran insisted he wasn’t “complicit” in the “devastating conflict” between “Israel and Palestine,” saying that he doesn’t publicly address politics because he has fans from “all backgrounds.”
The “Shape of You” singer later broke down in tears at his Lincoln Financial Field show in Philadelphia on Sept. 19, revealing his friends and family had abandoned him.
“In these situations you really find out who your friends are. It’s been a weird week,” he told the crowd. “Everyone’s telling me to cancel and I’m feeling all of my friends and family and people I know abandon me.”
On Sept. 24, Macklemore announced his “Free Palestine Tour,” with all proceeds going towards “organizations supporting the Palestinian people and movement.”
