4 Signs Your Phone Addiction Is Really Starting to Mess Up Your Body

As if our phones weren’t doing enough by taking over our attention and mental health, we can now blame them for f**king up our bodies too.

Doctors have started using the phrase “phone body” for some of the physical effects of holding our bodies in awkward, unnatural positions while we scroll. Considering most of us spend minutes, and sometimes hours, folded into these positions every day, it’s bound to start having consequences.

Here are some signs you’ve been scrolling too much and could probably use a walk.

1. About That Neck Pain

Picture holding a 10-pound dumbbell in your hand for hours on end, every day. Your muscles would be dying, right? The average adult head weighs around 10 to 11 pounds, and every time you hunch over your phone and scroll your FYP for god knows how long, your neck has to support that weight at an awkward angle.

A review found that the classic chin-down, head-forward phone posture strains the upper trapezius and neck extensors. Weirdly, though, posture didn’t predict who would end up with neck pain. Poor sleep raised the odds by 76%, and insufficient physical activity nearly doubled them.

So holding your phone higher might help, but your neck would also really appreciate it if you slept and occasionally got off the couch.

2. The Thumb Problem

We ask a lot of our thumbs and never really think about it. It’s holding the phone, swiping, tapping, typing, moving up, then down, then right, then left. And…it’s kind of constant.

A 2025 study found that more screen time and more daily phone unlocks were linked with signs of De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, an inflammation of the tendons that move the thumb.  Nearly a third of participants tested positive.

3. Your Eyes Are Barely Blinking

Phones also make us blink less. Like a lot less. A study in the journal Eye followed children playing games on smartphones and found their blink rate dropped from 20.8 times a minute to 8.9 within the first minute.

Blinking helps keep the eye’s surface lubricated. When it drops by that much, dry eyes and that gritty, tired feeling are pretty much par for the course. The old 20-20-20 rule still works here: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

4. Before You Scroll Yourself to Sleep

Bedtime is where most of us really commit to our phones, and that’s a big problem for your sleep. The blue light from the screen can suppress melatonin, the hormone involved in sleep timing. Harvard researchers found that blue light suppressed melatonin for about twice as long as green light and moved circadian timing by about twice as much.

The ideal advice is no bright screens for two or three hours before bed, which is a lovely idea for people who apparently don’t own phones. Turning down the brightness or using a blue-light filter is probably more realistic.

These little aches are easy to brush off because they don’t happen all at once. Your thumb starts hurting after a long scroll, or your neck feels stiff again after you’ve been hunched over the couch. But those small problems can add up over time. Pay attention to how your body feels after you’ve been on your phone for a while. If something’s starting to hurt, maybe that’s your cue to put it down for a bit and go do literally anything else.
