Before he hosted a state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping, Donald Trump said he’d never do it. MS NOW dug up the video Saturday.
On “The Weekend,” the show played a Fox News interview from Aug. 24, 2015, in which Trump explained how he would deal with China’s leader.
“I would not be throwing him a dinner,” Trump said in the clip. “I’d get him a McDonald’s hamburger and I’d say, we got to get down to work.”
He went on to say China had “sucked all of our jobs.”
One co-host joked that “there’s a tweet for everything” and “a video for everything,” and said he laughs “to keep from screaming into the abyss.”
“It’s a way with words that Donald Trump [has], but we just saw him host a state dinner, throw out red carpets all over the place, and on top of it, go to Andrews Air Force Base and greet the plane on the tarmac,” Jonathan Capehart said.
Mother Jones’ David Corn, who was on the show to promote his new book, compared the welcome to Trump’s 2025 summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. He said Trump stood on the red carpet “clapping for Vladimir Putin, bouncing up and down as if it’s Christmas morning.”
“He got nothing out of that meeting,” Corn said. “He got the pandas, but nothing out of this meeting.”
He said the pattern is the same with Xi, North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“He hates our democratic allies. He’s always dumping on them,” Corn said. “But when it comes to people like Putin and Xi Jinping, they get the honors, they get embraced, and he gets no concessions out of them.”
A co-host said Trump is the first president since 1962 to personally greet a foreign leader other than the pope at Andrews. He compared it to picking a friend up from the airport.
“Get an Uber. Come to my house. I’ll see you there,” he said. “I’m not picking you up.”
Corn also warned that Russia is running disinformation campaigns against Democrats ahead of the midterms, and he said Trump doesn’t care.
“He has no interest in protecting America or advancing American interests,” Corn said.
