President Donald Trump’s social media lit up Saturday as he shared a flurry of online posts criticizing Rep. María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) after the Florida Republican sharply broke with the president on his immigration policies.
Salazar, who’s endlessly praised Trump for his administration’s aggression against Venezuela, said that the president had “gone too far” with his mass deportations in a campaign ad, adding that some Hispanic voters “who helped” the president get elected “feel betrayed.”
In a span of roughly two minutes, Trump fired off 13 posts featuring screenshots of X users blasting Salazar — some demanding she be primaried, others suggesting she was “paid” to turn on him.
“Find out who PAID her to say those things…. Press, DO YOUR JOB!” wrote one X user whose comment was shared by Trump.
Among the more than a dozen posts shared by Trump, one showed an X user calling Salazar a “back stabber,” while another X user urged Trump to “remove his endorsement from her.”
For Ana Navarro, a former GOP strategist and Trump critic, Salazar’s sudden turn on the president was a move of desperation.
“This was a pretty much ho-hum race,” Navarro told The Washington Post. “I think most people weren’t paying much attention to it. And all of a sudden this ad comes out, and it’s like: ‘Whoa, what’s going on here?’ And then you look at the polls, and you realize she’s tied.”
