Analysts were left aghast and thinking about how to reckon with President Donald Trump’s insistence on banning certain media outlets from the White House.
During a Thursday segment on CNN, Jamal Simmons, the former communications director for VP Kamala Harris, said that Trump’s defiance of the law will force the American people to consider what matters. The discussion came after CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes was restricted from the White House despite a judge’s temporary order blocking Trump’s media ban.
“The American people deserve a free press. They deserve a freedom of speech. We fought a revolution for that. We fought a civil war so that we could give those rights to other people. We had World War II to defend democracy,” Simmons explained. “At this point, it’s time for all of us to have a really, really frank conversation about where do we go from here and what kind of principles tie us together around these freedoms?”
Former Trump White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said that she knew Trump would ignore the order and block a correspondent from entering the White House because he would always push back as much as he can.
She predicted that the Trump White House’s “next steps will be that they’re going to try to put some kind of due process in place because the courts keep leaning on that, and it’s going to be something that tries to box the media into, like I said, no correspondent or no shouting questions or something along those lines.”
She was referring to how U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, who issued the temporary restraining order blocking the media ban, wrote that the White House needs a procedure in place before it starts kicking journalists out.
Grisham slammed the White House for refusing to let reporters into the White House despite Kelly’s ruling, saying, “What they did was dishonest.”
