CNN’s Harry Enten was left stunned Friday after new data showed President Donald Trump reaching record-breaking lows heading into the midterms.
“When we break down the approval ratings by how strongly people feel, President Trump has the highest ‘strong disapprove’ rating going into a midterm election on record!” Enten said, citing his own polling aggregation that showed that 50% of Americans “strongly” disapproved of the president’s job performance.
“They don’t just dislike him, there’s record hatred for the president of the United States going into a midterm! The previous record holder was Trump going into the 2018 midterm, but then, he was only at 45%. Before that, it was [former President] George W. Bush going into the 2006 midterm at 41%.”
Trump’s approval among independents, according to polling data aggregated by Enten, was even bleaker for Republicans’ electoral prospects. Only 9% of independents strongly approved of Trump’s job performance, whereas 56% strongly disapproved, data that Enten argued sent a “strong signal.”
CNN’s John Berman asked Enten whether there was a “converse” to the record disapproval of Trump’s job performance, to which Enten revealed that the president’s most loyal supporters were abandoning him in droves.
“The ‘strongly approve’ rating? Just 18% strongly approve of the job that President Trump’s doing — that’s actually less than the average president going into a midterm at 27%!” Enten said.
“So Trump actually has fewer people loving him than what we see with the average president. Normally, Trump is able to counteract that strong hatred with strong love, but not anymore! The number just wants to jump off the screen!”
