MS NOW’s Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow huddled on Friday’s edition of “Deadline: White House” over how to respond to President Donald Trump’s growing assaults on the press — and Maddow pointed out how uniquely vulnerable a position the president is currently in.
Trump attempted to ban MS NOW, CNN, and Politico from the White House, only for a federal court to slap him down.
“Do you remember when your old boss, George W. Bush said, rarely is the question asked, is our children learning?” Maddow asked Wallace, to mutual laughter. “We first started talking about this when we first heard that, first of all, the case was going to be all three networks and that the pool was shutting itself down in solidarity with CNN … I said, rarely is the question asked, is our institutions learning? I think we are starting to learn.”
The key thing for media outlets to do, she said, is that “you do not take these things on one at a time. You do not bear the brunt of this yourself. You look to your colleagues, and if you’re lucky enough to not be the one singled out this time, don’t with the ones who are have been targeted.”
“I think that it is an iterative process,” she added. “We are learning what it means to stand up to an authoritarian government, and we are being slow about it. But we’re learning.”
Another important point, she continued, is that “he’s in a profoundly weak position right now. And it feels stupid to capitulate to somebody whose approval ratings are where our toenail fungus is. You know what I mean? … His political power is at a low ebb. He’s humiliating his own party. He’s humiliating his own MAGA infrastructure, even in terms of the way that he’s spending money.”
“I mean, his campaign travel plans are to go to Alabama and Oklahoma when he’s a Republican president,” she added. “I mean, why why would anybody cower before a political force that feeble?”
