President Donald Trump lashed out Tuesday at leakers who’ve exposed the United States’ rapidly depleting stockpile of munitions amid the deeply unpopular U.S. war against Iran, labeling them as liars, “cowards and traitors.”
“The cowards and traitors would love to say the United States is low on munitions. It’s not true,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “We have more munitions than we could ever possibly think of using, and are building them up now at levels we have never seen before.”
Despite Trump’s assertion, his own Pentagon inspector general revealed last week in a report that the United States was suffering “strategic inventory shortfalls,” and that the war against Iran had “revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply.”
Last Saturday, Bloomberg reported that U.S. munition stockpiles had been so stressed that the Trump administration had been forced to warn its allies that shipments of key weapons could be delayed by as much as five years, a development that international law scholar Alonso Gurmendi argued represented the end of “U.S. military superiority” on the world stage.
