President Donald Trump’s latest attack on the media that covers him critically has some of his closest aides reeling, according to CNN’s Alayna Treene.
Treene reported Monday on CNN’s “Erin Burnett OutFront” that people close to the president realized he embarrassed himself during his helipad ribbon-cutting celebration because no microphones from the press pool were there to broadcast his remarks. That could create extra problems for the president this week as he meets with global leaders at the United Nations, Treene added.
“People recognized that that was embarrassing and people close to the president recognized that that was embarrassing today,” Treene said. “So all of that, I think, is contributing to what we’re going to potentially see play out this week.”
Trump will meet with leaders at the U.N. at a time when he needs to build global support for his war in Iran and maintain a global coalition to ward off Russian aggression in eastern Europe. If Trump is able to strike a deal at the U.N., that would be useful fodder for him and the Republicans in the November elections.
However, Treene pointed out that reporters who usually broadcast those announcements, such as herself, won’t be around because of Trump’s media ban.
“I was actually supposed to be the one pulling with the president while he goes to all these meetings in that building behind me tomorrow,” Treene said from outside the U.N. “He is going to be frustrated that there’s not a camera there capturing a lot of this. So in some ways, it’s also detrimental to him.”
