White House ‘betrayal’ ignites new MAGA civil war: ‘Welfare queens’

Vice President JD Vance is barnstorming the country to sell a stay-at-home-parent subsidy plan, and it’s blowing a fresh hole in the MAGA coalition, according to The New York Times.

The Trump administration is drafting a proposal that would let stay-at-home spouses tap into a federal child care fund currently reserved for working parents, which typically pays out about $9,000 per child annually. Fox & Friends co-host Rachel Campos-Duffy gushed on air that it “might be my favorite policy, like, ever, that Trump has brought,” while other boosters called it a “grand slam,” a “no-brainer,” and even “President Trump’s greatest legacy.” Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) and Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), who’ve each tried and failed to pass similar bills, cheered it as vindication.

Others torched it just as loudly, branding the plan “socialism,” “rank politics” and “stupid.”

Economist Douglas Holtz-Eakin, who served under President George W. Bush, called it “a betrayal” of small-government principles, telling the Times, “Add work requirements here, but take them away there, just to use the power of the state to promote the family? A traditional conservative would say this is none of the government’s business.”

Radio host Erick Erickson went further, writing online, “Didn’t realize how many conservatives want to be or want their wives to be welfare queens, dependent on a government handout,” the Times reported.

Even allies of Vance’s traditional-family vision are balking. Marc Short, former chief of staff to Mike Pence, said Vance — seen as a likely 2028 contender — deserves scrutiny like anyone else

“When JD steps out and has a government expansion program, a government handout, we should be calling it out,” he suggested to the Times. “I don’t question his commitment to nuclear family. I just question a policy that stinks.”

According to the Times, “The split reaction reflects one of the emerging fractures in Mr. Trump’s MAGA coalition. Traditional Republicans, religious conservatives and America First populists have jostled for influence with the pronatalist movement, which aims for women to have more children and stay home to raise them, and supporters of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again movement.”
