Record share of voters motivated to oppose Trump in midterms, poll finds

An NBC News poll released Sunday found 43 percent of registered voters said they want their vote for Congress this fall to send “a signal of opposition to President Trump,” a record high in the network’s polls since 1998.

Presidential protest sentiment is up from 38 percent leading into Trump’s first midterms in 2018, and from 35 percent who signaled opposition to President Joe Biden in 2022. It’s also higher than the 37 percent who voted to oppose President George W. Bush in 2006, during the increasingly unpopular Iraq War.

A smaller 27 percent of voters said their 2026 vote will be “a signal of support” for Trump — slightly lower than in 2018 — while 28 percent say it won’t be a signal either way.

Despite the negative dynamic for Trump, the poll included some relatively good news for Republicans.

Democrats led in overall support for Congress by five percentage points among registered voters, smaller than Democrats’ nine-point average in high-quality polls this month. Democrats are expected to need a 3-to-4-point national margin in House races to win a majority of seats due to Republicans’ successful push to redraw districts in GOP-controlled states.

The poll was conducted Sept. 11-15, with 1,000 U.S. registered voters contacted by live interviewers and text-to-web methods through a voter file sample.
