Clever horror reboot has extreme gore and lots of language.
This sci-fi/horror reboot, based on the beloved video game series, shifts its focus from the central character of Alice to a goofy organ courier (Austin Abrams) who finds himself mixed up in a monster uprising. Violence is gory and intense, with gruesome killings, gunfire, jump scares, blood spatters, bloody wounds, creepy effects, severed limbs, makeshift weapons and monsters jumping to their deaths. Extremely strong language includes the constant use of words such as “f—,” “s—,” “motherf—er,” “a–hole,” “goddamn,” “b—-,” “Jesus” and “Christ.” (95 minutes)

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom (PG)
Age 5+
Wonderful stop-motion film mixes gentle scares with big laughs.
The third movie based on Aardman’s stop-motion animated TV series is a lightly spooky, Halloween-set comedy for the whole family. As with the previous installments, there’s no dialogue — just expressive sounds. Scares are mild and played for laughs: A sheep gets mummified in toilet paper, an angry mob chases a farmer it mistakes for a monster, and characters are shot with tranquilizer darts and flattened by a giant pumpkin (but no one is seriously hurt). There’s a shy, unspoken romance between two characters. Positive messages about teamwork and problem-solving run throughout. (91 minutes)

Crew Girl (TV-MA)
Age 14+
Romance and drinking in charming young-adult sports drama.
This teen drama series follows a high school rowing champion who joins the boys’ team when she moves to a new town that doesn’t have a girls’ squad. Expect a love triangle between the female heroine and two of her male teammates, with flirting, kissing, romantic complications and rivalry. Teens drink at a party, hide a keg and swig from a bottle of tequila; the protagonist, Teagan (Miku Martineau), drinks too much and has trouble walking out of the party (her mother helps steady her and isn’t angry at her daughter). Language includes cursing (“f—,” “a–holes,” “bulls—,” “hell,” “goddamn,” “b—-”) and sexist slang (male teammates mockingly call each other “ladies”). Teagan attends a wealthy private school, where students drive fancy cars and have huge houses. (Eight episodes)

Daniel and the Fiery Furnace (PG-13)
Age 11+
Poetic but detached biblical drama gets pretty violent.
This faith-based drama depicts the early days of the biblical prophet Daniel (Mena Massoud) and the story of how his three friends miraculously survived being thrown into a fire. There are strong themes of faith under pressure, courage and perseverance. That said, you can also expect peril, death and violence — including intense war scenes, implied sword slashings and stabbings, and people being set on fire and impaled. There’s some blood, and it’s implied that babies are violently killed. Animals kill humans and are killed by humans. The word “prostitute” is used, and women dance provocatively. Characters occasionally drink wine. (108 minutes)
