As the midterm elections grow closer, multiple polls this week brought good news for Democrats.
Political strategists and pollsters say surveys are usually more reliable after Labor Day, so here are some of the results that caught our attention this week.
AARP poll on Alaska
Alaska is one of the most important battlegrounds for control of the Senate, but quality independent polling is rare.
Now we have one. Democrat Mary Peltola, a former congresswoman, holds a six percentage point edge over incumbent Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan after ranked-choice voting, according to an AARP poll conducted by pollsters Fabrizio Ward and Impact Research. The poll surveyed 800 likely voters with a 3.9-point margin of error.
ReconMR/Siena poll on Texas
We have more evidence of a Democratic upset coming in Texas. Democrat Gina Hinojosa holds a narrow four-point lead over three-term incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, a ReconMR/Siena poll finds. Democrat James Talarico also widened his lead to six points over Republican Ken Paxton in the Senate race. The poll surveyed 614 likely voters with a 4.3 point margin of error.
YouGov poll on Ohio
In Ohio, 25 percent of likely voters think that former senator Sherrod Brown, a Democrat who lost reelection in 2024, is the incumbent in the state’s Senate race.
Brown is running against the actual incumbent, Republican Sen. Jon Husted. The Bowling Green State University/YouGov poll of 1,000 likely voters showed the Democrat with a narrow lead.
Washington Post-Schar School poll on Michigan
Our own pollthis week showed progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed with a narrow edge over Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s pivotal Senate race. Support for El-Sayed was lower than support for the Democratic candidate for governor and support for a Democratic-controlled Senate. The poll found, among other factors, lower support for El-Sayed correlated with an unwillingness to vote for a Muslim president. The poll surveyed 803 likely voters with a 3.9-point margin of error.
