A crucial group of voters who helped reelect President Donald Trump are so sour on his policies that they’re expected to ditch the GOP entirely, according to a new report.
More than 65 percent of Hispanic voters are unhappy with how Trump is handling his job, and 78 percent said they would rather see Democrats control Congress, according to a New York Times/Siena University poll analyzed by The Guardian.
“There’s no renewed affinity or love for the Democratic Party,” Mike Madrid, a campaign consultant and author who has studied Latino voting patterns for 35 years, told The Guardian. “They’re just extremely upset and disillusioned and angry, frankly, with Donald Trump.”
He added, “So they’re gonna leave the Republicans for the exact same reasons that they left the Democrats two years ago.”
The economy and cost of living topped voters’ concerns, said Clarissa Martinez De Castro, vice-president of the Latino Vote Initiative at UnidosUS.
“When we ask voters, ‘Ok, what is shaping your opinion about the president?’ the cost of living was number one,” Martinez De Castro explained. “Number two was immigration enforcement and deportation in U.S. cities; number three is back to the economy – wages.”
Other surveys echo the trend, The Guardian noted. About 63 percent of Hispanic respondents told a Fox News poll this month they plan to back the Democratic congressional candidate in their district, while an UnidosUS poll this spring found 54 percent favoring the Democratic House candidate against 27 percent for the Republican, The Guardian reported.
The White House pushed back, with spokesperson Allison Schuster telling The Guardian that Trump was “honored to receive a record level of support from Hispanic Americans that helped fuel his landslide 2024 election victory.” Republicans will be “fighting to make everyday life more affordable for working families,” Schuster told The Guardian.
Still, Martinez De Castro warned that a lot of Hispanic voters remain up for grabs.
“You have 40 percent of voters here for whom, many of them say, they don’t see the difference between the parties in terms of who really is going to be better,” she said. “That tells candidates: you have homework to do, and the clock is ticking.”
