Sen. Susan Collins‘s (R-ME) reelection campaign suffered a blow Friday when a group of Maine women who voted for her in the past made their mounting frustrations plain.
On MS NOW’s “Morning Joe,” analyst Elise Jordan shared video of an all-women focus group where voters explained their fury over Collins’ deciding vote to put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court.
A wide array of opinions were offered by the women; none of them supportive of the embattled Collins, with a great deal of the conversation centered on anger and dismay that Roe v. Wade was overturned with Kavanaugh’s avid support.
Jordan summarized Collins’ explanation — “Justice Kavanaugh gave her reassurance, more so than any other justice, that he saw Roe versus Wade as established precedent” — and asked one voter, “Is that a defense of her vote to confirm him that you accept?”
”Hell no!” the woman shot back. “That makes him a liar and it makes her unsure of herself.”
Asked if it would be helpful for Collins to admit she made a mistake, another suggested it might.
“I feel like it would need to feel genuine though, too, and not just as a ploy to, like, gain more support,” she said.
A pivotal moment came when Jordan asked, “Who right now is still undecided about who they’re voting for the Senate,” and six of the ten women raised their hands.
“Of the undecideds,” asked Jordan, “if you had to vote tomorrow, who would go ahead and vote for Collins?”
Only three of the six raised their hands.
After the clip, co-host Joe Scarborough remarked, “It’s amazing. They’re tired of her in many ways.”
