Republican support for Kansas House candidate Ann Reinhart evaporated this week after court records surfaced detailing a history of domestic violence and child abuse allegations against her, with both the state GOP’s campaign arm and the Kansas Chamber of Commerce pulling their backing days apart.
Reinhart is running for the House District 41 seat in Leavenworth County, currently held by outgoing Rep. Pat Proctor, against Democrat and former lawmaker Jeff Pittman.
According to Washington state court records flagged by the Sunflower State Journal, Reinhart faced two domestic violence assault charges in 2016 after allegedly physically striking her son and hurling drinking glasses at her daughter during an altercation, injuring the girl’s leg. The case ultimately resolved with Reinhart pleading to lesser charges, resulting in a mostly suspended sentence and roughly $973 owed in fines and court costs.
The allegations stretch back further. In court filings from 2011, Reinhart’s ex-husband claimed their son came to him saying his mother had wiped human waste on his leg and warned she’d do worse if it happened again; Reinhart flatly disputed that any such incident took place. An earlier filing from 2008 accused her of forcibly dunking their daughter’s head into bathwater during a bath-time dispute, an allegation Reinhart dismissed in court records as invented and untrue. The same filings describe an incident at a family reunion that year in which Reinhart allegedly grabbed her daughter forcefully enough to leave bruising.
The Republican House Campaign Committee didn’t mince words in explaining its decision. “The reports regarding Ann Reinhart’s history are deeply disturbing and cannot be ignored,” a committee spokesperson said, adding that the group had quietly decided months ago never to support her candidacy in the first place.
The Kansas Chamber of Commerce, which had endorsed Reinhart during her unopposed primary, reversed course once its political action committee released general election endorsements this week, leaving her name off the list entirely.
“Ongoing due diligence in HD 41 led the chamber PAC to reconsider its position and subsequently withdraw its endorsement in the race,” said Christie Kriegshauser, the chamber’s vice president of political affairs.
Reinhart offered little explanation herself, telling reporters only that she was “trying to sort this out” and promising a fuller response that, as of Thursday afternoon, still hadn’t materialized.
The collapse could hand Democrats a meaningful opening in their push to break the Republican supermajority in the Kansas House, which needs just five flipped seats to fall. Trump carried the district by 17 points in 2024, but Pittman has significantly outraised Reinhart heading into the fall, and Democrats are hoping anti-Trump sentiment drags down GOP candidates further down the ballot statewide.
Domestic abuse allegations have been an ongoing problem for the Republican Party. Earlier this year, the primary renomination campaign of Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) was derailed, in part due to reporting about how he struck his girlfriend at his D.C. residence.
