‘Um what?’ McConnell return comes with eyebrow-raising condition flagged as ‘bigger’ story

Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) finally returned to the Senate on Monday after his nearly three-month health-related absence, though his return reportedly came with a strange condition attached.

McConnell has been absent from the Senate since his hospitalization in June, which the Kentucky Republican claimed was due to a fall. According to reports, he was found unconscious in his home and administered CPR, leading some to speculate his condition was far more severe than initially claimed.

And yet, despite the great media interest in McConnell’s return to Washington, D.C., journalists were reportedly given an unusual directive regarding how they were permitted to document the senator’s comeback.

“Reporters were barred from recording video,” claimed Punchbowl News’ Andrew Desiderio.

A brief video of McConnell being pushed in a wheelchair from his D.C. home into a vehicle was captured by TMZ earlier Monday, though the senior Republican did not speak. No video has emerged of McConnell in the U.S. Capitol, which has sparked continued speculation as to the true state of the senator’s health.

“The press was barred from recording McConnell speaking in the halls of a public building. There’s no actual proof of his ability to speak or what he said,” wrote Kelly Cameron, a writer and disability activist, in a social media post on X. “That’s the bigger story. Why can’t his constituents see and hear him if he’s returning to cast a vote?”

Justin Kanew, the founder of the Tennessee Holler and former Democratic congressional candidate, called it “completely ridiculous” that journalists would agree not to record McConnell, and Jim Stewartson, a California-based writer and political commentator, argued the episode underscored just how old Congress’ membership has become.

The Tennessee Holler reacted with pure shock.

“Um What?” the outlet wrote in a social media post on X. “PSA: The moment you obeyed that command you stopped being ‘reporters.’”
