Conservative commentator Scott Jennings found himself outnumbered on a CNN segment as three panelists unloaded on President Donald Trump’s new effort to place his name on the Kennedy Center.
Republican pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson, former Obama adviser David Axelrod and former “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd challenged Jennings during a heated discussion Tuesday on “The Arena with Kasie Hunt.”
Todd called Trump’s effort “gross” and questioned why a living president would want his name attached to a memorial honoring the slain John F. Kennedy.
“There’s something really troubling about a living human being who needs to put their name on somebody else’s tombstone — because that’s what this is. This is Washington, D.C.’s tombstone to John Kennedy — and it’s gross.”
Axelrod then jumped in, pressing Jennings on Trump’s suggestion that renovations would not proceed unless he received recognition on the building.
“Do you think that’s appropriate?” Axelrod asked.
“I don’t know if I agree with your characterization of that,” Jennings responded.
“He said it today!” Axelrod quickly shot back, repeating the question.
Jennings declined to offer a direct defense, saying Trump would “fight it out” in court before adding: “I don’t personally care about this myself.”
Anderson meanwhile argued the dispute could deepen voters’ frustration with Washington insiders.
“He has done a lot of putting Donald Trump’s name on stuff first,” she said, warning that disillusioned Trump voters could conclude, “These people are all gross. I’m staying home.”
A federal judge ruled Tuesday that Trump’s name could not be added to the Kennedy Center without congressional authorization. The center’s Trump-appointed board subsequently voted to close the building for renovations.
