Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin may be in over his head with a festering MAGA “dilemma,” according to a new report.
One of the many things that the MAGA basehas been clamoring for is the deportation of Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), on allegations that she committed fraud on her naturalization paperwork. However, Republicans have not disclosed any evidence that would stand up in court to support such a claim, according to a new report from Will Sommer of The Bulwark.
That puts Mullin in an awkward position, Mullin noted. On one hand, moving to deport Omar could put Mullin in legal jeopardy because he would have to submit evidence to a court. On the other, not acting could put him in MAGA’s bad graces, thereby threatening his job within the administration.
“Like many of the pledges that people in Trump world make to prosecute and deport the president’s political enemies, this pledge has also run into legal hurdles and an actual reality that is not very accommodating to their goals,” Sommer wrote. “And it appears that Mullin is now set to take the blame for the absence of any action.”
“For nearly a decade, right-wing media — and Donald Trump himself — have convinced conservatives that Omar could be deported for some kind of incestuous but also fraudulent marriage to her brother that was designed to get him a green card,” Sommer added. “Every day that Mullin fails to deliver on that unlikely deportation, he’s getting blamed for it.”
