President Donald Trump dismissed artificial intelligence fears as a “hoax” in a call Monday with the chief executive of the world’s top chipmaker — a conversation that played out onstage in front of a cheering Los Angeles audience.
“The robots will not be taking over,” Trump told Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who was speaking at an event hosted by the “All-In” podcast — the home of many of Trump’s leading tech world allies.
The call encapsulated a split that has emerged in Silicon Valley in the days since the resignation of a researcher at AI maker Anthropic who warned that the technology could wipe out humanity. The industry’s leaders rallied over the weekend to call for a slowdown of the pace of development to give their companies more time to work on safety.
But Trump has repeatedly dismissed the concerns, saying they play into the hands of China. He has a powerful ally in Huang, whose company makes chips vital to AI’s success.
“America is able to lead and to do it safely,” Huang said.
