The Atlantic Launches New Weekly Video Podcast, The Permanent Questions With David Brooks

Today The Atlantic is launching The Permanent Questions, a new video podcast hosted by staff writer David Brooks about the fundamental questions of human life that every generation—and every individual—must attempt to answer. In new episodes publishing every Sunday, David will engage thinkers, writers, and artists in conversations about what makes us human, what gives life meaning, and how we can build richer relationships and a more just society. For the first episode, available today, David is joined by Meghan Sullivan, the Wilsey Family College Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, to consider what it means to live a good life. In an introduction to the show, David says: “There are a lot of shows about politics and business and health and tech, but there aren’t enough about the really big questions of life.” The podcast builds on David’s decades of writing about political, cultural, moral, and social issues. David joined The Atlantic’s staff after many years as a contributing writer, and has recently written about the crucial lessons for the Democratic Party; “The People Who Will Thrive in the AI Age,” about why people’s relationship to mental effort will differentiate them; how “History Is Running Backwards” and why reactionaries are taking over the world; and “Something Big Is Happening on Campus,” on how plenty is going wrong in American higher education, but a lot is also going right. The launch of The Permanent Questions is part of a continued surge of audio and video at The Atlantic, which has doubled its number of weekly shows, podcast staff, and audio revenue in the past year. Since 2025, The Atlantic has launched the video podcasts The David Frum Show and Galaxy Brain with Charlie Warzel, and this past summer expanded its flagship show, Radio Atlantic—co-hosted by Hanna Rosin and Adam Harris, with a weekly Monday video episode hosted by Adam. The podcast is produced by The Atlantic and made possible by support from Yale University, where David is also a presidential senior fellow at Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs. Episodes of The Permanent Questions will be released each Sunday. Viewers can subscribe to watch on The Atlantic’s YouTube channel or wherever they get their podcasts.
